Hi my name is Tammy Hayes. I have been the proud Owner/Operator of First Steps Daycare since 2000. I am an ECE graduate of Ryerson Polytechnical Institute with a BA. I have been in the childcare profession for over 25 years and I understand Quality Childcare first-hand. Our facility is enveloped with the Professional Development I pride myself in having. I participate in Career Advancement opportunities on an ongoing basis through workshops, conferences, and Institutes. My skills and knowledge are offered back to the community through my functioning as a Facilitator of several committees in the childcare field. As the Director of First Steps I collaborate with the team and offer training so we are current in early childhood education and we are able to offer your children high quality programs, skilled teachers, and a beautiful environment that encourages growth and development.
As a Mother of two beautiful girls that attended First Steps in their early years, I understand the stress of researching childcare programs to find an inviting environment with High Quality Standards in education that can accommodate my specific needs as a family. The First Steps Team is here to work with families to collaborate the best program that suits your needs. The family is the best indicator of “What their child deserves,” and the diversity of First Steps we will facilitate that need any way we possibly can.

Hello, my name is Denise and I am a loving and caring mother of two wonderful children. After achieving my Nursery Nursing Examination Board Diploma in England I worked as a daily nanny and later I moved on to work as a manager at a day care with a capacity of 140 children. I have worked in the child care field my whole adult life and would not change it for the world! Having over 23 years of experience I can honestly say each day has never been the same and I love my profession!
I see the children in my care as little spongers, ready to soak up all the fun, loving, nurturing and learning experiences First Steps and I have to offer.

My name is Candace. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to have my placement here in Guelph for high school and college. I got my ECE from Conestoga College in June 2013. I’ve lived in Guelph my whole life and I’ve always had an interest in working with children. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and watching movies.

Hello, my name is Amanda and I am one of the preschool staff at First Steps. I have been working here for 5 years and I have enjoyed working in every program we offer here. I am a proud mother of two wonderful girls, and have recently returned from maternity leave with my youngest daughter. After 2 years attending Conestoga College I graduated with a diploma in early childhood education. I enjoy coming to work everyday to learn and to grow with the children.

Hello, my name is Ashley I am the Senior Preschool teacher. I have been in the Field for over 9 years and graduate the ECE Apprenticeship program at Mohawk College. I am Bilingual in French and English and inspiring to learn Spanish. I am a mom of two beautiful children and 3 step-sons and they inspires me daily to be a better teacher and person. I believe that all children are equal and each one of them are individuals.
My teaching style is very inspired by the Reggio-Emilia Approach: I believe that a natural environment and using loose part provides children with endless possibilities to discover, learn, embark on new adventures and explore their imaginations! I am looking forward to work with the staff, children and their families and our community.

Hi, My name is Meghan Dykeman. I was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, but grew up in Burlington Ontario. After high school, I spent four years back in the maritimes where I achieved my ECE from Oulton College in Moncton, New Brunswick. In the past I have also been a Behavioural Interventionist to children with Autism and have worked in both one on one therapy programs and in group settings. I was taught and have always applied the Emergent Curriculum in all my classrooms, where I don’t just see the children as the learners, but even as the teachers and leaders amongst each other. The Emergent Curriculum is very play based and focuses very much on the community, self awareness and family! We as teachers are there to guide and assist the children in achieving their goals as well as furthering and building on their interests. Above all else we’re their to provide our devoted care and support. You quickly learn that when you work in a child care environment, you learn just as much from the children as they learn from you!

Hello, my name is Sarah. I am an ECE apprentice and currently attend the ECE program at Conestoga College. I have lived in Guelph my whole life and really enjoy working in the community I grew up in. I look forward to continuing my apprenticeship at First Steps and being able to grow and learn with the children.
